The Rudd Government's internet filtering plans are unworkable, and the scheme would "perniciously" create an infrastructure to allow censorship to be applied more broadly in future, shadow Treasurer Joe Hockey has told the Grattan Institute.

A top media rights watchdog has listed Australia along with Iran and North Korea in a report on countries that pose a threat of internet censorship.
Paris-based media rights group Reporters Without Borders (RSF) on Thursday put Australia and South Korea on its list of countries "under surveillance" in its "Internet Enemies" report.
Australia was listed for the government's plan to block access to websites featuring material such as rape, drug use, bestiality and child sex abuse. Critics say the plan is a misguided measure that will harm civil liberties by blocking a broader range of content than just nasty material.

Commercial free-to-air TV networks are calling on advertisers to cut them some slack over figures that appear to confirm fears that audiences of their primary channels are being cannibalised by new digital channels.
Some media buyers are delaying judgment over the double-digit declines in audiences for Seven, Nine and Ten's main channels until after Easter, when they will have at least nine weeks of the ratings period to review.

RADIO'S baby boomer experiment has ended. From tomorrow, DMG Radio Australia will rename its two vega stations - on 95.3 FM in Sydney and 91.5 FM in Melbourne - Classic Rock.
The move is final acknowledgement the much-vaunted vega stations aiming to please a baby boomer audience desiring both music and talk failed.
http://www.theaustralian.com.au/busi...-1225839665827
DMG's Assistant Group Program Director Dan Bradley says the stations formerly known as vega, will be the only dedicated Classic Rock radio stations in Sydney and Melbourne.
"The timeless quality, the energy and the raw passion for Classic Rock music warrants a radio station dedicated to it 24 hours a day, seven days a week. For those who grew up listening to AC/DC, INXS, Zeppelin and Chisel, Classic Rock 95.3FM and 91.5FM are stations they will love."
DMG Radio developed the new stations after an extensive strategic review of the Sydney and Melbourne markets in recent months choosing a name not too far different from ARN's 'Classic Hits' slogan.
In building these new stations DMG needed a "simple, focused music concept that would appeal to the 35-54 audience," according to CEO Cathy O'Connor.
She says Classic Rock 95.3FM and Classic Rock 91.5FM will be "a celebration of an era of music which evokes enormous passion from adult listeners."
Breakfast presenters Maroon in Sydney and Dicko and Dave in Melbourne, will retain their shifts. The station went to minimalist announcer content in other shifts recently, in preparation for its secret plans to relaunch. Alice Cooper's US radio show will also be heard on the station and Barry Bissell's Cover to Cover will remain in the schedule.

Multiple FOX sources have confirmed to US trade journals that the network's 24 has been axed.
The series, currently in its 8th season, is due to end with a 2 hour finale in late May.
Speculation was rife in recent years that with costs skyrocketing, along with falling ratings, were forcing a re-think of FOX's strategy.
Variety reports that the series may move to the big-screen but this is yet to be confirmed.

The results of Whirlpool's 2009 Australian Broadband Survey are now available.
The survey was conducted over a four week period — from 1 January to 1 February 2010, during which it was successfully completed and verified a total of 23,683 times.
The results show a significant opposition to the government's ISP filtering plan, with only 7.4% indicating support. It also reveals that over 90% of respondents believe they could easily circumvent the filter if it was in place.
The survey also covers consumers' attitudes on a wide variety of topics relating to their choice of broadband ISP and hardware.
The complete report with detailed ISP breakdowns can be found here.

The Federal Government’s proposed ISP-level filtering policy is costly, complicated, and will be completely ineffective. In the coming weeks, the Labor party is tipped to unveil the legislation that will compel Australian Internet Service Providers to filter the entire world wide web, with the intention of blocking access to specific web pages.
The principal objection I have is that the policy mandates that ISPs spend a huge sum of money to deploy and maintain masses of new infrastructure. Whether this burden is passed onto Australians via taxes or via increased ISP fees, we will end up paying for it. We will end up paying, and it won't do anything.
Sure, the technology works as specified; that much has been ascertained. The problems lie in the policy itself.
It is widely assumed that the filter will make life difficult for people trading in material such as child pornography, but in reality, it will have no impact on child pornography rings. Indeed, Stephen Conroy himself admits the policy "is not targeted at the people perpetrating it".[1] He rightfully acknowledges that people knowingly seeking the material can bypass the filter or use non-web systems like peer-to-peer.
The goal, according to Conroy, is to protect the general public by minimising inadvertent access to so-called 'refused classification' material. However, there's no evidence that any inadvertent access is taking place; the infinitesimal trickle of complaints to ACMA is hardly evidence of a national crisis. It must also be noted that the Internet is brimming with legal adult material that -- if inadvertently accessed by children -- has just as much potential to cause distress.
This is not an "evidence-based" approach to policy.
Any claim of a mandate is clearly invalid, as the current policy differs greatly from what the Labor Party took to the last election.... [Read More]

The commercial free-to-air TV networks are putting their weight behind the launch of an electronic programming guide and an aggregated online catch-up TV service to land the next blow on pay TV but admit plans have been delayed by technological difficulties.
Robin Parkes, the chief executive of the free-to-air marketing body Freeview, confirmed the launch of a Freeview-branded electronic programming guide in June to rival Foxtel's iQ device. Its catch-up TV service, accessed via the EPG, will be turned on in the last quarter, she said.Freeview will not make any of the hardware but is working closely with manufacturers of TV sets, digital video recorders and set-top boxes to have devices in stores in June.(don't hold your breath )

Leno averaged 6.6-million viewers on Monday night, beating CBS' David Letterman, who averaged 3.8 million, and ABC's "Nightline," which drew 4.1-million viewers, per Nielsen. Among adults ages 18 to 49, Leno was first with a 1.6 rating, followed by "Nightline" with a 1.3 and Letterman's 1.1 rating. Each rating point equals 1.3-million viewers in that demographic. For what it's worth, Letterman was up in adults 18 to 49 Monday night.
Having digested those numbers, now we can go a little ways down the road. Leno's 6.6-million viewers were fewer than Conan O'Brien averaged in his premiere and in his final show. However, in between Conan's first and last shows, he averaged 2.7-million viewers and a 1.1 among adults 18 to 49. In other words, Leno can take a big hit in the ratings later this week and still beat O'Brien's average. For the really curious, Leno's last telecast in May, when he ended his first run as "Tonight Show" host, averaged 11.9 million, and his average last season was 5.14 million and a 1.4 rating in the 18-49 category.
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/ente...rst-place.html
Also
In the local people meter markets Leno was twice as popular with adults 18-49, scoring a 2.0 rating vs a 1.0 rating for Letterman.
In the metered market houshold ratings between 11:30p-12:30a Jay Leno’s return to The Tonight Show dominated Leterman and Late Show. Leno had a 5.4/14 (household rating/share) to Letterman’s 3.0/8.
Sure, Leno’s first night back (and perhaps first week or two back) is likely inflated by a post-Olympic halo, but the early indication is “all is forgiven.”
Nightline had a 3.4/8 between 11:30p-12:00a.
While much higher... [Read More]

THE loss of Top Gear to the Nine Network will have a material effect upon the ability of the public broadcaster to commission Australian productions, according to Matt Campbell, SBS's director of television and online content.
"The loss of Top Gear is certainly a blow to us, and it is a blow to the producers sitting in the room, because Top Gear for the last four years has been funding many of your programs," Mr Campbell told delegates at the 2010 Australian International Documentary Conference in Adelaide last week.
Campbell also said advertising revenue from the program was "quite a few millions -- and without it, frankly, we are in the shit"."How dire is it?" he asked of SBS's budgeting. "It's dire. We have no money for online; we have no money for SBS TWO."

The first of Sky Racing's new channels, Sky Racing2, will go live on Tuesday 30 March as the first stage in Sky's racing vision revolution.
Sky Racing2 will feature more than 80 thoroughbred, harness and greyhound meetings each week.
Of these, 35 will be new race meetings and more than half of those will be Australian.
Sky Racing is creating a new world of racing vision in 2010 with the introduction of two new channels, to complement the existing Sky Racing channel. The three channels are:
#Sky Racing1 (Channel 519, FOXTEL and AUSTAR): Existing Sky Racing channel, which will continue to give viewers comprehensive Australian thoroughbred, harness and greyhound racing coverage.
#Sky Racing2 (Channel 520, FOXTEL and AUSTAR): Will offer viewers expanded coverage and choice of national and international thoroughbred, harness and greyhound racing.
Along with Sky Racing1, it will provide vision of all TAB races.
#Sky Racing World (Channel 521, FOXTEL and AUSTAR): A superior thoroughbred racing channel, capturing the best racing action from Australia and around the world.
The launch of Sky Racing World will take place in early May, as part of the second stage in the rollout of the new Sky Racing channels.
FOXTEL and AUSTAR will announce pricing for Sky Racing2 and Sky Racing World this month.
Sky Racing1 will remain on the base package.

If you’re planning to censor free speech on the internet, what better approach to take than to, er, censor debate about how you’re planning to censor free speech on the internet? Brilliant.
That, according to one sharp-eyed Register reader, is the game being played by Australian Communications Minister Stephen Conroy, whose ministerial website is currently set up so as not to show searches on embarrassing terms such as "ISP filtering".
An increasingly common feature of interactive websites is the "search cloud": this is a listing out of search terms on a site, often with the added feature that the most frequently appearing terms are picked out by size or weight of type.

Austereo today announced that the Today Network’s Hot30 Countdown will undergo hosting changes with Tim Lee and Carla ‘Biggzy’ Bignasca leaving the show.
Tim Lee will move home to Melbourne to join the Today Network’s Fox FM where he’ll be taking on the morning shift.
Tim’s outstanding work over the past three years has made the show one of the network’s strongest and most successful. He is one of the country’s hottest jocks and will be a critical part of keeping The Fox on top in 2010.
With the re-structure of the show, Biggzy has decided to seize the opportunity and leave the Austereo family after nearly four years with the show. While other opportunities were available at the station for Biggzy, she has decided to pursue other radio ambitions and to concentrate more on television. She has been instrumental in the show’s huge success over the years from her behind the scenes producing role to her fantastic work on-air.
Tim and Biggzy said, “We’ll really miss our loyal listeners and we’ve had some fantastic times hosting the Hot30. However there comes a time in life when it’s ‘just time’ to start something new and after over three years doing the show, we feel that time is now.”
Tim and Biggzy’s final show will be Friday, March 12.
Further news on the new Hot30 Countdown will be announced in the coming weeks.

Early results from broadband information site Whirlpool's annual survey has found that 91.8 per cent of respondents do not support the idea of mandatory internet filtering, with most believing the government should focus on educating parents and children instead.
In total, some 21,755 people responded to the survey, which is held each year and is seen as a key indicator to the opinions and internet usage patterns of technically proficient Australians and early technology adopters. The full results of the survey, which covers a range of other issues such as hardware usage and experiences with ISPs, are expected to be published soon. Delimiter has gained early access to the filter section of the survey only.

The family of Maria Korp - the woman who was bashed, choked and left to die in the boot of a car at Melbourne's Shrine of Remembrance - says an upcoming telemovie will traumatise her teenage son if it is screened in Victoria.
The Nine Network is scheduled to broadcast Wicked Love: The Maria Korp Story on Sunday night 8.30pm, billing it as a gripping suburban thriller of "how an explosive love triangle got out of control and became one of our most notorious criminal cases".But Gust Korp today urged the broadcaster to pull the show from Victorian screens.
